Of all the industries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, perhaps none have been as disrupted as the restaurant sector. Widespread public health orders and business restrictions have had a devastating impact on businesses and employees and forced widespread closures and layoffs. In this report, released in March 2021 in the midst of the pandemic, we dive into the restaurant industry at a variety of levels and use our analysis to generate specific recommendations for the City of Long Beach to inform their restaurant retention program.
